A year of press and PR for my coaching business

At the end of 2023, I joined Lucy Werner’s Hype Yourself substack to give some focus to my PR efforts. Her books (Brand Yourself and Hype Yourself) have been brilliant tools as I’ve built my business.

I didn’t go into 2024 with any particular plan, but I threw myself into commenting and putting my views out there - and a year on I have a ton of PR to share!

January

My first piece used Lucy’s tip always to share a great, landscape, photo when pitching to the press - this got me the main photo on an article about going sober in the Mirror. This piece linked back to my website (win!).

February

Three pieces in Feb - I was on a roll! First, I shared how to tackle life swerves in The Midst, then my comments on nursery fees appeared in The Times, and finally, I shared some tips for engaging small children in little moments of learning.

March

You might remember, in March 2024 childcare was finally getting high on the political agenda. Pre-election the Conservatives were looking for some vote winners and the Spring Budget made changes to the child benefit threshold. I shared my comments on what the Government needed to do for working parents in The Mail (1, 2), and the i paper.

I also shared my tips on making money while on maternity leave (without leaving baby) in The Telegraph.

April

Two more pieces in the i paper this month:

  • Low-effort parenting tips - including making the most of things like parental leave and quick ways to stay regulated.

  • Pensions and maternity leave - another where having a great landscape photo helped this piece shared my experience with pensions and what I wish I’d known before becoming a mum.

May

How to convince your employer to let you work from home (in the Telegraph) - still very relevant! I think this was one of the ones I where I started getting approached for my expert comment, showing the value of continuously showing up.

July

The i paper (a reliable advocate for working parents!) covered my comments on the cost of summer childcare. My own juggle meant slowing down my PR efforts over summer.

September

Back after the holidays with comments on how workplaces should support working mums in Stylist magazine (I’ve been a subscriber for some time - absolutely dream coverage!).

October

My first BBC article - completely left-field but a chance to connect with a BBC business journalist. It also gave me some national radio practice - I was interviewed on BBC 5 Live breakfast in a follow up (sadly now expired so I can’t link this one).

October also brought the first example of coming across my model being talked about without me present. I was listening to the Five Hour Club Chat on Boundaries, listen below ⤵️

November

My first piece in Netmums on how to advocate for yourself in pregnancy. (Another link back in this one too - win!). And another BBC radio piece, this time on BBC Radio Kent sharing my experience with anxiety and panic attacks (again, also expired now so I can’t share for catching up).

Wow, no wonder I’m tired!

Looking ahead to 2025, I’ve recorded a few podcasts due to come out this Spring, I’m in discussions about a piece on working motherhood in a national paper, and I’m thinking about what I can proactively pitch too.

If you’re reading this and want to get my comments for a piece after seeing the sort of things I share, or you want to collaborate on something, drop me a message - sam@thefloat.space
