What actually is coaching? How can it help me with confidence?

You’ve heard of people hiring coaches but you’re not sure what that actually means.

Perhaps when you think of a life coach you imagine a glossy blonde from Los Angeles sweeping in and telling you you’re living your life all wrong?

My experience of coaching

I started working with a coach when I was working in a new role with a lot of tricky internal politics. I found that I was questioning myself at every turn and that feeling that I wasn’t good enough to do the job was getting in the way of actually doing the job. I had regular phone calls with my coach and she helped me understand what was driving those thoughts and how I could interrupt them to stop them getting in the way. I still have her voice in my head when I’m facing challenges now.

Coaching with the float space

When you first get in touch with me we’ll have a short call, 30 minutes or so, to talk about what you want to get out of coaching and see how we both feel about working together. This is completely free. It's really important to me that I’m the right coach for you. If I’m not, I can recommend some other coaches or talk to you about potential other solutions for the challenge you’re looking to address.

We’ll then schedule some coaching sessions. Usually these will be 60-90 minutes long and take place every 2-4 weeks. Sometimes we might agree that a single power session of 90 minutes works well for you too, but often a programme of regular coaching can be more effective. For example, say you want to be more confident at work to successfully lead a new project. Working together over a few months we can try out different tools and explore your leadership style, at the same time as putting it into practice on the project.

I’ll be on hand over email and/or WhatsApp between sessions if you want to explore ideas, access more resources, or ask questions.

is it really possible to be more confident? aren’t some people just naturally confident?

100% yes. but you need to find what confidence means for you. I can help you explore your values and how you want to show up in the world. When you live and work true to your values it is much easier to feel confident to be yourself, ask for what you need, and to show up how you want to.

that might be at work around a promotion or starting in a new team or workplace. Or it might be about returning after some time off for parenting or sickness. wherever you could do with a confidence cheerleader, I can be there.
